The gardens are open for self-guided tours for individuals on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-8:30 pm in June and July, from 1:00-8:00 pm in August and from 1:00-7:00 pm in September. No reservation is required.

Groups of fifteen or more may make a reservation for a guided tour on Tuesday or Friday, by filling out this form or emailing the Estate Manager at estatemanager@conestogahouse.org. Reservations can also be made by speaking with the Estate Manager at 717-397-5353 Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

Tours of the interior of the house are not available.

We prefer to keep the look of a private estate. For that reason, there are no signs. Please refer to this map and these directions to help you find the house and for parking information.

To prepare you for a pleasant visit, we ask that you please read through the following notes and advise everyone in your group of this information before your tour date.

Guided Tours

Following a 12-minute audio-visual presentation, tour groups of 15 to 40 people will be divided into smaller groups for a guided tour of the gardens led by one of our volunteer docents. Please be as accurate as possible in giving us the total number of people in your group beforehand, since the size of your group will determine the number of docents needed as guides. Tours for larger groups may be arranged.

The tour of the gardens takes about an hour.

What to Wear

We suggest wearing light-colored, comfortable clothing along with hats and sunglasses for protection against the heat, strong sun, and summer humidity.

There are over ninety steps in our multileveled garden areas and some of the areas are uneven.  We advise that you wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.

Accessibility

Because of the way in which the gardens were originally laid out and terraced, parts of the garden are only accessible by walking, including the use of steps.

A limited tour of the lower areas, comprising about half of the garden area, is available for people with limited mobility, those who need assistance walking and people in wheelchairs or on scooters.

Eating on the Grounds

The dance floor has an eating area with seating for 32 people and is available for use by guided tour groups and individuals during the Wednesday and Thursday self-guided tour times. Additional smaller eating areas for couples and individuals are available on the back terrace and in the boxwood garden.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, please bring only small bagged or basket lunches.

No large coolers or table reservations are permitted.

There is a 30-minute time limit on the use of tables.

Guided tour groups that are also having a picnic will have limited access to kitchen facilities in the main house for food refrigeration.

Guests are expected to remove all refuse from the grounds and leave the area in the same condition as it was found.

Use of the Pool

The pool is available for use by groups during Tuesday and Friday tours and event days. Permission must be obtained in advance. The tour or event group must provide a certified life guard and present a copy of the certification prior to use of the pool.

The pool is not available for use on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Restrooms and changing areas are available in the bathhouse adjacent to the pool.

Restrooms

A restroom is available in the visitor center located at the entrance to the garden along the back driveway in the garages complex. Additional facilities are located in the bathhouse.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited on the Conestoga House grounds at all times.
